American Beauty Berry

American Beauty Berry (Callicarpa americana) is a deciduous native shrub prized for its spectacular clusters of vibrant purple berries that encircle the stems in fall and early winter. The small, inconspicuous pale pink flowers in early summer give way to these eye-catching metallic purple fruit clusters that persist well into winter, creating dramatic seasonal interest. The bright green, elliptical leaves turn golden yellow in autumn before dropping. This resilient woodland edge plant has a naturally arching, informal growth habit that works beautifully in naturalized settings, woodland gardens, and mixed borders.

Care Tips: Prune back by one-third to one-half in late winter to encourage dense growth and maximum berry production. Can be cut back more severely if needed to rejuvenate or control size. Best berry display occurs in sites with at least half-day sun. Berries attract songbirds though they're typically eaten only after other food sources are depleted. Fairly pest and disease resistant. May self-seed in favorable conditions but is not considered invasive in its native range.
