Bicolor Salvia
Bicolor Salvia
Bicolor Salvia (Salvia sinaloensis) (also known as Sinaloan Blue Sage) is a striking perennial featuring intensely cobalt-blue flowers with distinctive white lower lips, creating a dramatic bicolor effect. This uncommon salvia forms a low, spreading mat of textural dark green foliage that often develops purple-burgundy highlights, especially in cooler weather or bright light. Native to the mountainous regions of Mexico, it creates a stunning groundcover that gradually spreads to fill spaces between larger plants. The vibrant blue flowers appear on upright stems above the foliage, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies throughout the warm season. Unlike many drought-tolerant salvias, this species appreciates regular moisture and some afternoon shade in hot climates.
Care Tips: Prefers rich, well-draining soil with consistent moisture—not as drought tolerant as many other salvias. Benefits from afternoon shade in hot climates. Cut back by one-third after main flush of blooms to encourage continued flowering. May go dormant in winter but returns reliably from roots in spring. Can be grown in containers and overwintered indoors in colder zones. Excellent for woodland edges, shaded rock gardens, or as a colorful groundcover. Protect from hard freezes in Zone 8.
