Blue Grama
Blue Grama
Blue Grama (Bouteloua gracilis) is a fine-textured, warm-season native grass that forms attractive clumps of blue-green foliage topped with distinctive horizontal seedheads that resemble eyelashes or eyebrows. This drought-resistant prairie grass was a dominant species of the Great Plains and remains an excellent choice for natural landscapes, meadow gardens, and xeriscapes. Extremely resilient to harsh conditions, Blue Grama can withstand both drought and cold while requiring minimal maintenance. Its seedheads provide winter interest and food for birds, while its deep roots help prevent soil erosion.
Care Tips: Cut back to 3-4 inches in early spring before new growth appears. Tolerates poor soils but requires excellent drainage. Does not tolerate shade or excessive moisture. Can be used as a low-maintenance, low-water alternative lawn in some regions. Seeds abundantly but is not invasive.
