Brazos Penstemon
Brazos Penstemon
Brazos Penstemon (Penstemon tenuis) is a charming native perennial featuring slender spikes of tubular, lavender to purple flowers that attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. Native to Texas and Louisiana, this Gulf Coast penstemon is more tolerant of heat and humidity than many other penstemon species. The attractive basal rosette of deep green foliage remains compact while the flowering stems rise above, creating a layered effect in the garden. This adaptable plant performs well in meadows, cottage gardens, and naturalized areas where its reliable spring bloom provides early-season color.
Care Tips: Provide good air circulation to prevent foliar diseases in humid conditions. Trim flower stalks after blooming to maintain neat appearance and prevent self-seeding if desired. Tends to be short-lived (2-3 years) but may self-seed modestly to maintain presence in the garden. Excellent drainage is important, especially in winter. May go dormant or decline in extreme summer heat but often rebounds with cooler fall temperatures.
