Compact Texas Sage
Compact Texas Sage
Compact Texas Sage (Leucophyllum frutescens 'Compacta')(also known as Texas Ranger or Silverleaf) is a dense, rounded evergreen shrub featuring silvery-gray foliage and stunning purple-pink flowers that appear in waves throughout the warm season, often triggered by changes in humidity. This smaller, more compact variety maintains the drought tolerance and resilience of the species while fitting better in modern landscapes. Native to the arid regions of Texas and Mexico, it thrives in hot, sunny locations and poor soils. The aromatic foliage and nectar-rich flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds while being resistant to deer and rabbits. Often called the "barometer bush" because it blooms in response to rising humidity before rainfall.
Care Tips: Minimal pruning needed—best to maintain natural shape with light selective trimming. Avoid shearing into formal shapes which destroys natural form and reduces flowering. Excellent drainage is absolutely essential—plant on slopes or in raised beds if soil is heavy. Water deeply but infrequently during establishment; almost no supplemental water needed once mature. May suffer in humid climates with heavy soils or excessive rainfall. Prune only after spring growth begins, never in fall or winter.
