Coral Honeysuckle
Coral Honeysuckle
Coral Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens)is a native twining vine featuring clusters of tubular coral-red flowers with yellow throats that attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. Unlike its invasive Asian cousins, this well-behaved North American species provides wildlife value without taking over the garden. Its semi-evergreen to evergreen foliage (depending on climate) has an attractive blue-green color, and the bright red berries that follow the flowers provide food for birds in late summer and fall. This versatile vine can be trained on trellises, fences, or allowed to scramble over rocks and slopes.
Care Tips: Prune after flowering to control size and shape, removing up to one-third of older stems if needed. Provide support structure for climbing. Mulch to keep roots cool and conserve moisture. Unlike Japanese honeysuckle, this native species is not invasive but can benefit from occasional thinning to improve air circulation.
