Flame Acanthus
Flame Acanthus
Flame Acanthus (Anisacanthus quadrifidus var. wrightii) is a deciduous native shrub featuring brilliant orange-red tubular flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies throughout the hot summer months when many other plants have stopped blooming. Native to Texas and northern Mexico, this heat-loving perennial forms an airy, open shrub with slender branches and small, oval leaves. Also known as Wright's Desert Honeysuckle or Hummingbird Bush, it blooms prolifically from summer through fall, with the vibrant flowers standing out dramatically against the light green foliage. Extremely drought and heat tolerant once established, Flame Acanthus thrives in challenging conditions and bounces back quickly from stress.
Care Tips: Prune back by one-third to one-half in late winter before new growth appears to maintain compact form and encourage dense flowering. Dies back in colder zones but typically regrows vigorously from the roots in spring. Tolerates a wide range of soils but requires good drainage. Very low water needs once established—avoid overwatering which can cause leggy growth and reduced flowering. Deer resistant. Can be grown in large containers. Seeds and vegetative parts may cause mild stomach upset if ingested.
