Dwarf Barbados Cherry (Malpighia glabra) is a compact, evergreen shrub featuring delicate pink flowers followed by bright red, cherry-like fruits rich in vitamin C. This smaller variety maintains the ornamental and edible qualities of the species while fitting better in modern landscapes and containers. The glossy, dark green leaves provide year-round interest, while the small, five-petaled pink to white flowers appear in cycles from spring through fall. Native to the Caribbean and Central America, this versatile plant can be used as a specimen, informal hedge, or container plant. The tart, nutritious fruits attract birds and can be harvested for jellies, preserves, or fresh eating.

Care Tips: Protect from frost in marginal zones or grow in containers that can be moved to shelter. Prune lightly after fruiting cycles to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Fertilize lightly in spring with a balanced organic fertilizer. Fruits develop quickly after flowering—harvest when bright red and slightly soft to the touch. May develop chlorosis (yellowing leaves) in alkaline soils; amend with acidic organic matter if needed. Thorns may be present on some plants, so place accordingly.
