Martha Gonzales Rose
Martha Gonzales Rose
Martha Gonzales Rose (Rosa 'Martha Gonzales') is a compact, reblooming antique China rose featuring clusters of vibrant crimson-red, semi-double flowers that appear continuously from spring through fall. This tough, heat-loving rose forms a dense, rounded shrub with distinctive reddish-purple new growth that matures to glossy dark green. Named for the gardener who discovered it growing in her Navasota, Texas garden, this rose has earned a reputation for exceptional disease resistance and drought tolerance. The slightly fragrant blooms attract butterflies and provide season-long color with minimal maintenance, making it an excellent choice for borders, cottage gardens, and landscapes where easy-care roses are desired.
Care Tips: Prune lightly in early spring to shape and remove dead wood. Deadheading is not necessary as this rose self-cleans fairly well, but removing spent flowers can encourage more blooming. Relatively disease resistant but benefits from good air circulation. Apply a balanced organic fertilizer in early spring and again after first flush of bloom. More drought tolerant than most roses once established but performs best with regular deep watering. Excellent candidate for organic rose care—thrives without chemical sprays.
