Red Carpet Sedum
Red Carpet Sedum
Red Carpet Sedum (Sedum spurium 'Dragon's Blood') is a low-growing, mat-forming succulent groundcover featuring rich burgundy-red foliage that creates a stunning carpet of color throughout the growing season. The small, scalloped leaves intensify in color with cool temperatures and bright sunlight, becoming particularly vibrant in fall. Star-shaped deep pink to red flowers appear in summer, attracting butterflies and pollinators. This tough, adaptable groundcover spreads gradually to form a dense, weed-suppressing mat that works beautifully in rock gardens, between stepping stones, or cascading over walls and container edges. The evergreen to semi-evergreen foliage (depending on climate) provides year-round interest.
Care Tips: Excellent drainage is essential—plant in gravelly or sandy soil, raised beds, or containers. Too much shade can cause leggy growth, diminish flowering, and reduce the intensity of the red foliage color. Can be divided at any time during the growing season to propagate. Deer and rabbit resistant. Tolerates light foot traffic and moderate drought. May struggle in extremely hot, humid climates with heavy rainfall and poor drainage. Trim back after flowering if plants become leggy.
