Red Yucca
Red Yucca
Red Yucca (Hesperaloe parviflora) is a striking evergreen succulent featuring arching, grass-like blue-green foliage and dramatic coral-pink to red flower stalks that rise well above the foliage. Despite its common name, it's not a true yucca but a related plant with softer, more flexible leaves that lack the sharp terminal spine of yuccas. Native to Texas and northern Mexico, this heat-loving perennial produces tubular, nectar-rich flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies throughout the warm season. The architectural form makes it an excellent specimen plant for xeriscape gardens, rock gardens, and contemporary landscapes. Deer typically avoid the tough, fibrous foliage.
Care Tips: Plant in well-drained soil—cannot tolerate wet feet, especially in winter. No supplemental water needed once established except during prolonged drought. Remove spent flower stalks to maintain tidy appearance and encourage additional blooms. Older plants can be divided in early spring if desired, though they're generally long-lived without division. Cold-hardy but may benefit from reduced winter watering in colder zones. Yellow-flowering varieties are available, as is a dwarf form (Brakelights) with more intensely red blooms.
