Silver Bush Germander
Silver Bush Germander
Silver Bush Germander (Teucrium fruticans) is an elegant, evergreen shrub featuring striking silvery-gray foliage and delicate lavender-blue flowers that appear in spring and continue intermittently through summer. Native to the Mediterranean region, this drought-tolerant plant brings a beautiful silver accent to the landscape year-round. The small, oval leaves are covered with fine hairs that give the foliage its distinctive silvery appearance and provide protection from heat and drought. With an open, somewhat sprawling growth habit, this aromatic member of the mint family can be maintained as a formal hedge through pruning or allowed to develop its natural graceful form. The small, two-lipped flowers attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
Care Tips: Prune in early spring to maintain desired shape and promote denser growth. Can be sheared into a formal hedge or left to grow in its natural form. Excellent drainage is essential—plant in raised beds or on slopes if soil is heavy. Very drought tolerant once established but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods. Tolerates salt spray, making it excellent for coastal gardens. May struggle in areas with high humidity and poor air circulation. Nearly pest and disease free when grown in appropriate conditions.
