Texas Redbud
Texas Redbud
Texas Redbud (Cercis canadensis var. texensis) is a stunning native small tree or large shrub featuring a profusion of magenta-pink flowers that emerge directly from the branches in early spring before the leaves appear. Distinguished from other redbuds by its smaller, glossier, more leathery leaves with wavy, slightly undulating margins, this drought-tolerant variety is adapted to the challenging conditions of its native Texas. The heart-shaped foliage emerges with a reddish tint, matures to a deep glossy green in summer, then turns yellow-gold in fall. After flowering, decorative flat seed pods develop, adding winter interest to the landscape.
Care Tips: Water deeply but infrequently during establishment; becomes quite drought tolerant with age. Prefers well-drained, alkaline soils but adapts to various soil types if drainage is good. Minimal pruning needed—primarily to remove dead or crossing branches. Best planted in spring or fall. More resistant to leaf scorch in hot, dry conditions than Eastern Redbud. May be grown as a multi-stemmed shrub or trained to a single trunk small tree.
