Texas Star Hibiscus
Texas Star Hibiscus
Texas Star Hibiscus (Hibiscus coccineus) is a striking native perennial featuring dramatic, star-shaped crimson flowers with five narrow, pointed petals that can reach 6-8 inches across. This bold, architectural plant emerges late in spring and grows rapidly to form upright stems with deeply lobed, maple-like foliage that provides interest even when not in bloom. Despite its common name, it's native to wetlands and marshes throughout the southeastern United States. The spectacular red blooms appear from mid-summer through fall, attracting hummingbirds and butterflies. Dies back to the ground in winter but returns reliably from its hardy root system in late spring.
Care Tips: Cut back dead stems to the ground in late winter before new growth emerges. Prefers consistently moist soil but can tolerate average garden conditions with regular watering. May need staking in windy locations or if grown in partial shade. Patience is required in spring as it emerges later than many perennials. Mulch heavily in colder zones to protect roots. Can be grown in large containers or at the edges of ponds and water features. Seeds freely in ideal conditions but seedlings are easily recognizable and manageable.
