Yellow Honeysuckle
Yellow Honeysuckle
Yellow Honeysuckle (Lonicera flava) is a native twining vine featuring clusters of fragrant, bright yellow tubular flowers that attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. Unlike invasive Japanese honeysuckle, this well-behaved North American species provides wildlife value without taking over the garden. The opposite, oval leaves have a blue-green color and are often fused around the stem (connate) at the base, creating distinctive cup-shaped leaf pairs beneath flower clusters. The bright red berries that follow the flowers provide food for birds in late summer and fall. This versatile vine can be trained on trellises, fences, or allowed to ramble as a groundcover over banks.
Care Tips: Prune after flowering to control size and shape, removing up to one-third of older stems if needed. Provide support structure for climbing. Best in moist, well-drained soil but adaptable to various conditions. Mulch to keep roots cool and conserve moisture. Unlike Japanese honeysuckle, this native species is not invasive but benefits from occasional thinning to improve air circulation. May be semi-deciduous in colder regions of its range.
